When the book is working best, comeauu feels like a sustained bit of stand-up comedy, the letters not congealing so much into a narrative but bouncing along as collected riffs, collected variations on the same riff. Tricks in literature have gotten a bad rap. I only started reading it because my husband had borrowed it from someone and it was lying around the house and looked vaguely interesting.
