There is incident with an extremely high cliff that must be ascended by a steep, slippery and very narrow zig-zagging track, with the help of her two companions, Sorrow and Suffering. Now I think that the author meant that we must be careful about saying things that are far from clear are certain. Mountain of Spices have a special place in my heart. They offer themselves so sweetly and confidently and willingly, even if it seems that there is no one to appreciate them.

This is not a bla-bla-book although it is a story but the genuine profound experience the author lived all her life and also while she was visiting Switzerland for a days-holiday.

It was true, just as he had said, it did cause a piercing pain, but it slipped in quickly and then, suddenly, a sweetness she had never felt or imagined before tingled through her. The author was giving a much needed message that the Christian path is often a hard and difficult one. It also seems that the allegory is frequently “padded” with writing that exists solely for the sake of making a cohesive story which it doesn’t and doesn’t have any allegorical meaning.

How often do I sabotage my own efforts for one of these reasons? Recommend it to anyone who needs encouragement. Although it has the same issues as the original, it is much more compact and doesn’t wander in circles quite so much! Follow Much-Afraid on her spiritual journey through difficult places with her two companions, Sorrow and Suffering. I loved how the author spoke of her journey in the last chapter.

To paraphrase Beth Moore, we will never find our way to our Promised Land unt I didn’t read this book until I was on old lady and I saw my own story written in every detail in every page, finding understanding of why God expected me to travel such hard roads during my life as a slow learner. One of the most meaningful and gorgeous books I’ve ever read. This book is a tricky one to judge.

It was like comfort food, frankly. The story of Much-Afraid and her journey of falling increasingly in love with God as she climbs the mountain is tremendously uplifting and inspirational. Hurnard’s early writings especially Hinds’ Feet on High Places and the sequel Mountain of Spices were embraced by the mainstream Christian community, but later on in her life she seems to have departed from orthodoxy.


This book helped me to realize the rewards received when one mirrors the uurnard of Christ to bring Him glory so that we might know, and share truth.

Almost exactly one year ago, a friend read an excerpt of this book to a group of women. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. I would actually recommend the abridged children’s version of this book more highly. He then again asks what if he did.

Hinds’ Feet on High Places

It does not cease to be exact. I have no doubt this was the right time for me to read this book. Other books in the series. This would’ve made it more relatable to the average Christian’s experience, in my humble opinion.

Perhaps it was the execution that turned me off. It’s no literary masterpiece and there is much telling vis showing but the messages so resonate in a reader’s heart that one doesn’t reflect on the simplicity of hnids craft. I would be so grateful.
