This is the very first poetry book in urdu what I read in my young age. Read for inspiration, insights, dard-e-dil or just to be amazed at the artistry of this master. The selection of words and phrases with the mixture of Urdu grammar is marvelous. Mind you, that does not mean that his poetry is simple!

Amongst the world’s great literary masterpieces–on a par with Shakespeare,Hafiz,Goethe,Pushkin. I was 15 when Englsh read this book first time. Even though he wrote in the 19th century, his thoughts are usually much easy to comprehend than some of the other popular Urdu poets. It needed lot eglish efforts, reading them as they are the first time, then reading translations and then trying to understand whatever I can, but after doing this all I can say is this may be among the greatest thing ever written on this planet!.

Picked it up again while browsing my bookshelf a few days back, re-read some sections and was reminded once egnlish just how beautifully this man wrote! A critical introduction to Ghalib’s work, chronology of important events in his life, and bibliography are also provided.
