The frame story fredericck set in as senior civil servants in Whitehall set about reforming the intelligence services. It is a book I pick up once every years and every time I do, it still feels fresh to me. Worth a read for the Cold War espionage plays. The Deceiver By Forsyth, Frederick. Whereas experienced field agents like McCready know that these approaches can be avoided or fooled, and it takes a human agent to gather reliable intelligence. But Times decekver changed.

The final one is unique amongst all Forsyth works for one unexpected quality, humour, which is not immediate and not apparent, but definitely and subtly there in the way a part of Caribbean is portrayed.
Facts and fictions Interwoven into the stories are countless chunks of recent history as Forsyth does his trademark thing of interweaving recent events with fictional characters and plots. Of the stories told, my favorite is “The Price of the Bride”, a very believable story of a double agent from erstwhile USSR giving himself into the hands of the Brits and ending up with their American “cousins” and who does a thorough job of depressing morale inside the CIA.

McCready and all the old school spies he represents, may seem like a fossil to the guy with a cell phone, a gps and a ‘beam me up’ team sitting back home with computers, but he’s not traceable, when the electricity fails he’s not at a loss of how to contact home, and when the ‘beam me up’ guys don’t get the chopper into the right sector on time to pull him out he’s still got a hole in the ground to go to and a backup plan to get his defector out.
This is the subject matter of this thriller.
